Hello,
My name is Jenn. I am a 33 year old single mother to a wonderful 19 year old teenage boy named Kevin. Kevin and I live just outside the Boston area, in Arlington, MA. I have always had a passion for creating crafts. As a child I was always eager to sit and watch my mother make beautiful handmade floral wreaths. When I was in middle school I would create friendship bracelets for all my close friends. At that time the only two patterns I knew how to make were the candy stripe and chevron patterns. About a little over a year ago I found Bracelet Book and Friendship-Bracelets.net, two websites that have every friendship bracelet pattern imaginable. I was very excited, but did not want to just make bracelets and store them away. I wanted a way to share my work with others. This is when I decided to open my Etsy shop, Bracelets By Jen**. In my shop you will find various types of embroidery friendship bracelets. To create the bracelets I use a technique known as macramé. This involves tying embroidery floss thread into hundreds of tiny knots to create the bracelet pattern. Two of the most popular types of bracelets have been the ombre (some call it gradient) chevron bracelets, and the awareness bracelets. In my shop you will also find various other handmade items, such as scarfs. I am a beginner knitter, therefore the only thing I really know how to knit is a scarf. I'm getting better at it, and hopefully will be adding other knit items to my shop in the future.
History of a Friendship Bracelet
The history of a friendship bracelet suggests that a friendship bracelet is given as a sign of friendship. It is intended to be tied on the wrist of a friend and worn continually as a symbol of lasting friendship. You can also select colors for a friendship bracelet that reflect the character traits of the intended recipient:
Pink ~ Kind
Red ~ Honest
Orange ~ Energetic
Yellow ~ Cheerful
Green ~ Responsible
Blue ~ Loyal
Black ~ Strong
Others also say that while the recipient is having the bracelet tied on their wrist by their friend to make a wish. Traditionally, the bracelet is meant to be kept on the wrist until it's worn and disintegrates naturally. At that time the wish is supposed to come true.
However, today friendship bracelets seem to be appearing on the wrists of everyone from children to adults. They come in all different shapes, sizes, colors and styles. Many friendship bracelets today are not just created with embroidery floss alone. I have seen people add charms, chains, rhinestones and many other pieces to the bracelet. A few months ago I started offering the option of adding clamps, clasps and chains to my bracelets. I found that some people wanted to be able to remove the bracelet when they showered, etc. By adding these pieces, it allow for easy removal of the bracelets.
About Me
At the you age of fourteen I became a mother to a beautiful baby boy. It was extremely difficult, however despite the circumstances I somehow managed to graduate high school in 1997 at the top tenth percent of my class. The following year I started nursing school. However, toward the middle of my second semester the person I was dating became extremely verbally and physically abusive. At that time I ended up having to leave nursing school. With the help of the police, I was able to have him sentenced to jail.
In the spring of 2014, I plan on returning to school to complete my nursing degree. My dream job is work in the psychiatry field as an RN. I feel that it would be a great way for me to learn in more detail about myself and what I went through in the past. Also, I feel that I have many things to contribute to others because of what I've been through. I believe a book can only teach you so much. Understanding how a patient feels through first hand experience can give you a better understanding and compassion that books can't do.
I also love creating other crafts such as scrapbook and Project Life layouts. I started doing this after my trip to Disney World with my son in 2004. I had dozens of pictures and wanted a creative way to display them. If my nose is not in a book, creating some kind of craft, or I'm not still trying to figure this whole blogging thing out, I am usually with friends at my local Starbucks. When I have free time I also enjoy playing softball, camping, skiing and baking.

**Just to clarify, my name is spelled with two n's. However, when I first opened shop, Etsy would not allow me to have Bracelets by Jenn as my shop name. I think it may have already been taken.
