I started The Horse Tail Legacy shop on Etsy.com so other horse lovers can have custom jewelry made from their horses tail. Anyone that has had a connection to a special horse knows that it is a one of a kind feeling. Horses have the power to change your life and they have for me. My horses BarRoom Legacy and Heza Holi Sugarman are both American Quarter Horses trained in the western style of riding of Reining. These horses become so in tune to you that they respond to your slightest movement. With a connection like that it is only natural to want to have them close. One way is to make jewelry or other items from their tails. Many of my friends started to ask me to make items for them like bracelets and belt buckles and after a few request I felt I could do this for other horse lovers as well. Etsy.com was the natural choice to start this business since people that shop on Etsy want one of a kind and custom made items. I have found that my lack of knowledge to promote my using social media has left me hanging with a shop without any activity. I don't know how to connect to the people that would like the items I make. I am hoping this group will help me understand the cyber market place. Thanks Margaret

Nice to meet you. I would have loved that many years ago when I lost my mare. So, if you learn the tricks of SEO for etsy shops (info on the forum), you are likely to find the first few buyers that way. Then maybe word of mouth will help. I'd also look for horse loving teams to join.

Rhi, you are correct it is the equine version of victorian mourning jewelry. Many horse owners keep their horse's tail after they pass. I have a few friends that had tails from their horses and they didn't know what to do with it. My horses are still alive and getting the tail pieces is like getting a hair cut it does not hurt the horse. You just don't want to take the whole tail off than they will not have anything to swat the flies. Finding the correct market contact is the hard part. I need alot of help understand cyber marketing. Margaret

Welcome Margaret! I checked out your shop through the team member list over on Etsy. Your story and your jewelry are so unique and your pieces are beautiful. I know there has to be a market out there for what you have to offer. I'm a little terrified of horses myself, but I think they are beautiful. And to the people who live and work with them I know they become like family members.
My best girlfriend in high school used to have an Arabian show horse. When her family could no longer afford to keep him stabled (they lived in the city) and she had to sell him, it nearly killed her. I know something like this would have meant a lot to her.
This forum is a great place to learn how to get found and make your shop the best it can be. Best of luck to you!
