My name is Marcella and I make fascinators...or hair pretties as my kids call them.
I started making fascinators a few years ago because I saw a peacock headband in a store. DIdn't buy, went back a week later and they were sold out. I figured, "I can do that" and started making them. My daughter was 1 at the time and she wore them all the time. Then I started making a bunch for my nieces and friends. Then people told me I should open an Etsy shop...so I did. Now I have this shop on Etsy, a failed personal website (worth a try right?) and things in 3 local boutiques. I sell mostly via word of mouth but Etsy is a good launching pad.
I've had bad luck with craft shows b/c everyone wants bedazzle kitty sweatshirts and wreaths or cheap non-handmade things. I'm trying out a trunk show at a preschool next week. A friend of mine is a teacher there and when they do parent-teacher conferences they have a few vendors come in while the parents are waiting for the teacher. We shall see how that goes. I've sold $150 in the parking lot of my daughter's preschool before so I think its a good market for me.
Best of luck you guys and hopefully this new group will help everyone's sales!

Good luck Marcella! I recently added barrettes to my store - I make flowers using a loom and attach to a snap clip or French clip. I'm looking for new ways to market them as well, so I'm curious to know what works for you. I've given quite a few as gifts, but so far word of mouth is not spreading!
